How to get your pages cited in Google AI Overviews

A practical checklist for structuring content so Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode cite your pages as sources.

By the WebsiteMatrixs team · Updated 2026-10-30 · 6 min read

Google's AI Overviews answer a query at the top of the results page and link to a handful of sources. Being one of those sources keeps you visible even when fewer people scroll down.

Start with pages that already rank

Google mostly cites pages that already perform well for the query. Look in Search Console for pages ranking in positions 1 to 10 on question-style searches. Those are your best AIO candidates.

Answer first, then explain

Put a direct, two-sentence answer right under each question heading. Then add detail, examples and evidence. This structure gives Google a clean passage to quote.

A checklist for each page

  • Use question-based H2 and H3 headings that match real searches.
  • Include specific numbers, steps and definitions rather than general claims.
  • Show who wrote the page and why they're qualified.
  • Cite sources for statistics and add a last-updated date.
  • Mark up FAQs, how-tos and products with schema.
  • Link to related pages so Google sees depth on the topic.

Track it monthly

Keep a list of target queries, check whether an AI Overview appears and note which sources are cited. Re-check after each update so you know what moved the needle.
